Students freeze for 3 minutes to raise awareness about homophobic abuse For three minutes on Wednesday, the University of Montana Oval was filled with an odd, purple sight. Students lugging backpacks across the lawn stopped in midstride. Cigarette smoke twirled in ghostlike tendrils around unmoving fingers. Couples froze in midkiss. The event was to honor the lives of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth who have committed suicide in recent months. http://missoulian.com/news/local/article_3fa5805e-dcce-11df-b7db-001cc4c002e0.html
From Obama, the Tax Cut Nobody Heard Of HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - Half-dozen guests were asked by a reporter what had happened to their taxes since President Obama took office. In a troubling sign for Democrats as they head into the midterm elections, their signature tax cut of the past two years, which decreased income taxes by up to $400 a year for individuals and $800 for married couples, has gone largely unnoticed. As Thom Tillis, a Republican state representative, put it as the dinner wound down here, “This was the tax cut that fell in the woods — nobody heard it.” http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/19/us/politics/19taxes.html?src=me&ref=us

Coalition Forces Routing Taliban in Key Afghan Region
NATO forces, with the help of a new mobile rocket, have been able to clear out portions of Afghanistan which have been held by the Taliban for years. This could be a major gain for President Obama who just recently committed more trips to the war against the Taliban. There are worries though that the gains in Kandahar will turn out like other operations against the Taliban, where they just return once the area has been cleared. Still though both experts and civilians agree, Kandahar is the key to peace in Afghanistan.
The decision to repeal the “don’t ask don’t tell” law has once again been reversed. The Ninth Circuit California decided to let the Pentagon continue with the Status Quo until a full case could be heard in front of the court. Until then, the military will be allowed to continue with their enforcement of the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy. This comes as bad news for many open American gays who saw this as their opportunity to support their country in arms.
University of Montana looks at restructuring debt to save $4 million
The University of Montana will be looking to change up their financial situation by taking advantage of low interest rates. UM will be asking the Board of Regents to reissue bonds from 1998 and 1999 in order to take advantage of the low rates. The around $62 million in debt is a result of recent campus renovation and building, in places like the Lomasson Center and Rec-Center. They figure any erasure of debt will be good for the institution and the students themselves.

Governor Schweitzer and both Legislative Council Chairman Dennis Himmelberger and Senate Minority Leader Carol Williams are still at odds over Schweitzer's lawsuit that contends the legislature passed an unconstitutional bill in 2009. Court Keeps Military Gay Policy for Now A federal appeals court temporarily stalled the court decision to allow openly gay recruits to be accepted into the military. The decision was made in a response to an emergency request from the government, and allows the Pentagon to continue to bar openly gay, lesbian, and bisexual services members. The decision will be in effect until the court decides whether to issue a longer stay until February, when the court will hear the full appeal. Demonstrations against French pension reform turn violent Scattered violence by French youth increased Tuesday, adding tension to the protest-related disruptions the country has experienced over the past week. The issue at hand is an increase in the required retirement age, from 60 to 62. The latest protests also are coupled with an angry airport workers strike, which caused flight cancellations and delays earlier in the week. Youths clashed with riot police in various areas, though no serious injuries were reported as of late Tuesday. Store windows were shattered, cars and garbage cans set on fire, and youths threw rocks at officers, notably in the center of Lyon, and in Nanterre, west of Paris. From Obama, the Tax Cut Nobody Heard Of
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. As Thom Tillis, a Republican state representative, put it as the dinner wound down here, “This was the tax cut that fell in the woods — nobody heard it.”

ReplyDeleteNATO forces, with the help of a new mobile rocket, have been able to clear out portions of Afghanistan which have been held by the Taliban for years.

Demonstrations against French pension reform turn violent
Scattered violence by French youth increased Tuesday, adding tension to the protest-related disruptions the country has experienced over the past week. Students blocked the Place de la Republique in Paris and threw objects at police who forcefully opened the major intersection. Throughout the country, union officials said the 3.5 million people participated in the protests.

Deep Rifts Divide Obama and Republicans
After the Republicans took back control of the House on Tuesday, Republican leaders met with President Obama Wednesday to discuss working together on fixing the ailing economy. Although they both expressed sentiments about cooperation, neither side was very willing to concede positions on key issues. Obama took responsibility for the "shellacking" his party took in Tuesday's elections and said he was willing to tweak some of his policies. Republicans now have leadership positions in the House to fill, with John Boehner of Ohio slated to be the speaker and Eric Cantor of Virginia as Majority leader.

Ronald Smith set to be executed on Jan. 31
Ronald Smith, the man who killed two Browning men in 1982 was given an execution date of January 31 of next year. Smith was originally offered a 100 year sentence but chose the death penalty. He later changed his mind but the State Supreme Court refused to hear his case. Smith now has 10 days to seek clemency. He first has to go through the Board of Pardons, who would then make a recommendation to Governor Schweitzer. Schweitzer, however said he will follow the requests of the victims families, who all wish to carry out the death sentence. Whether the death sentence will be carried out or not depends on the availability of sodium thiopental, one of the drugs used in lethal injection and whether or not the State Supreme court will hear Smith's case.
