Rulings affect wolf and grizzly bear management in Montana
Federal Judge Don Molloy has decided that gray wolves will be placed back on the threatened species list, meaning they cannot be hunted, and that Montana biologists have no authority to manage grizzly bears in the Yellowstone ecosystem. ReplyDeleteIn Silver Spring Md, 3 hostages were kept inside the Discovery Channel Headquarters. It about 4 hours until police shot and killed the gunman. The building is being watched as it is assumed still dangerous.

The United States have officially announced the official end of combat operations in Iraq. However, Iraq does not have a coalition government yet set in place, so more work is yet to be done. The new phase in Iraq is being named Operation New Dawn by military officials.

Montana has been long known of being tolerent of drinking while driving. Last year, a highway patrolman was killed because of a drunk driver which sparked debate into the topic. In Helena, police are now requiring past dui offenders to do daily tests at their own expense.

China Will Require ID for Cellphone Numbers

As of this week, the Chinese government is now requiring proof of identification or credit card records in order to activate a cell phone. Although they claim that this requirement is to protect consumers from unwanted spam, could it be a way for the government to monitor the personal/political lives of it's citizens?

Discovery Channel HQ hostages freed as gunman shot dead
James Jay Lee was killed at the Discovery Communications headquarters near Washington, D.C. After entering the building with a gun and bombs strapped to himself, he took three people as hostages. The police were able to put him to rest before he was able to detonate the "bombs" and take the lives of innocent civilians.

Almost 200 UM students living in dorm lounges
This year, incoming freshman must deal with the inconvenience of not having a legitimate dorm room. The university's acceptance rate seems to be rising while the living quarters on campus are not. The UM seems to be gaining popularity nationwide. If the trend of higher freshmen enrollment continues, additional dormitory space needs to be provided.

ReplyDeleteIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have begun negotiating peace treaties for the first time in 20 months. Both parties were animate about the how the negation process will be very difficult. Mr Abbas is asking for the demilitarization and the lift of embargos on the Gaza Strip. Mr. Netanyahu has a condition that Israel’s safety is taken into consideration and that they are recognized as a Jewish state.

Oil platform explodes off La. coast; 13 rescued
An oil platform 100 miles off the cost of Louisiana exploded causing one injury. The nature of the explosion has not been reported yet, and according to the companies spokes person, there appears to be no oil leaking. All 13 workers aboard the oil platform were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard

Yellowstone Club security guard pays $1,735 for illegally killing black bear
A security guard has been charged for killing a black bear while trying to haze the animal into leavening a pinball course. Apparently the guard used a live round instead of a rubber bullet while trying to scare it away. The bear that was killed was found with two cubs, while one was captured the other is assumed dead. The Guard has to pay $1000 in restitution and $735 fine in justice Court.

KALISPELL, Bruce Parish a longtime Flathead County Sheriff`s deputy was cited for driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol level over the limit. Officer was ticketed, but not determined if he struck transient or how he was injured.

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill
This is the largest accidental oil spill in history. There were a series of failed efforts to plug the leak, later after a number of days were plugged with cement. The new regulations impose stronger review for deepwater drilling which will hopefully repair the shattered reputation.

Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country", Mr. Obama said. The death toll for Iraqi civilians was the highest in August since May 2008 when nearly 400 civilians lost their lives. 295 civilians were killed in August with another 508 wounded according to the Ministry of Interior. All of this coming one day after Obama announcing the end of U.S. combat operations in Iraq.

U.S. puts legal pressure on Pakastani Taliban
The U.S. goverment turned up the heat and put more legal pressure against the Qaeda-linked Pakastani Taliban. The group is accused of a failed Times Square bombing attempt in May as well as the suicide bombing of the C.I.A base in Afghanistan in December that killed 7 Americans. It was one of the largest single-day losses in C.I.A. history.

Coal project in Eastern Montana needs more federal support
Leaders of the Crow Tribe near Billings said last week said that $7 billion coal-to-liquid fuels plant proposed for the reservation could plumit if the federal government does not give them more support. The leader of the Crow Tribe, Black Eagle, says the anti-coal attitude in Washington D.C. is scaring away potential investors. No coal-to-liquid plants have been built in the U.S. and the plant could pull the rural reservation out of poverty. The start date for building the project has been pushed back from 2012 to 2013.

Hostages Safe as Police Shoot Maryland Gunman
James J. Lee, a gunman supposedly upset about the Discovery Channel's network programming held three individuals hostage, 2 employees and a security guard on Wednesday at the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Spring, MD. No one was hurt in all the chaos. All 1900 workers got out safely and the gunman was shot down by police.

Downing Mountain fire: 70 homes evacuated, 412 acres burned
Thursday evening, the people of Hamilton watched as lightning struck down on Downing Mountain. The fire ignited immediately resulting in the evacuation of 70 homes. The Red Cross helped out with providing a place for those who had no where to go and had been evacuated from their homes. No homes had been burned as of Friday night.

Benjamin Netanyhau, Israeli Prime Minister, met with Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian leader in Washington to discuss a possible peace treaty. The two talked of a possible 2 state agreement that would bring a cease-fire to the area. A comprehensive deadline of one year was set to resolve the issue.

Removal of BP Gulf well's blowout preventer has started
British Petroleum has started removing the cap from their well that exploded months ago. The process is being delayed by weather in the gulf right now, but BP says that replacing the cap will be a start to permanently fixing the well. It is a very difficult process that will take several weeks to complete.

Missoula man sentenced to 15 years for sexting 11-year-old girl
29-year-old Allen D. Clairmont of Missoula has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for soliciting sex from an 11 year old girl via text message. U.S. sues Arizona Sheriff in Civil Rights Investigation
U.S. Justice Department officials announced Thursday that it had sued controversial Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio for failing to turn over documents dealing with his aggressive enforcement of Arizona's tough immigration law. The suit came two months after the law was halted by the Justice Department. Arpaio has consistently denied the Justice Department's requests for information since March 2009.

Cpl. Bruce Parish was ticketed by Kalispell Police Saturday night after a report that a transient was struck by a car near a local bar. Although court records state that his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit, Parish plead not guilty on Tuesday. Police still have not determined the transient's cause of death and will not take disciplinary measures against Parish until the investigation is complete. New Yorkers Conflicted Over Islamic Center
A recent poll of New Yorkers on whether or not an Islamic Center should be moved indicates that most residents are in favor of the center being moved. The Islamic Center stirred a controversy when it was announced that it was going to be located nearly two blocks from Ground Zero of the 9/11 attacks. While a majority of those polled said they believe that the Muslim group has a right to build the Center at the site, they do not believe that they should. Most of the support for the Muslim side comes from Manhattan, while the other boroughs heavily oppose the center. Pakistan Raises Security After Attacks
Hundreds of people packed the streets of Lahore, Pakistan to mourn the victims of Wednesday's suicide bombings on Shiite worshipers. The attacks not only caused a major panic in the city, but a clash between protesters and police, who the protesters blame for not being able to prevent the attacks. Demonstrators burned a police vehicle and attempted to set fire to a police station. Appeals Court Backs Away From Broad War Powers Ruling
On Tuesday, the nine judges on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously voted not to rehear the case of a Yemeni prisoner detained at Guantanamo Bay. However, seven of the judges issued an additional statement rejecting a contentious portion of the original ruling, which had stated that presidential power cannot be restricted by international law.

Tester tours Missoula stimulus projects, holds public meeting
Senator Jon Tester visited Missoula on Monday to see local results of his support for the stimulus bill. He also lead a public meeting at the Missoula Public Library, in which more than 100 citizens shared their views about the economy and what still needs to happen.

California fire scene: “Like a moonscape”
San Bruno, California – An immense gas-fueled blaze, had killed four people as firefighters attempt to determine the reason of the fire. Huge fireballs shot 80 feet in the air by a ruptured natural gas transmission line. California Lt. Governor Abel Maldonado said, he was shocked by the “horrible tragedy”, along with others that had lost their homes. Just about 100 people evacuated their homes out of the neighborhood.

British prostitution ring sentenced to 2 plus years each
London, England – Three women and a man had been admitted to trafficking in underage girls. An officer had called the phone number from a note left behind and later met up with the traffickers and arrested two of them. The four were sentenced to terms ranging from 2 ½ years to 2 years 9 months. All of them pleaded guilty to trafficking and prostitution offences.

Street racer sentenced to 5 years in fatal Highway 10 crash
Missoula - Matthew Chase was sentenced to 10 years for negligent homicide. He had been street racing (while inebriated) and had been involved in a crash which killed another racer (also inebriated) and injured several passengers.

TRAVELOCITY INVESTS $500K TO PROMOTE MONTANA TOURISM
At the Montana Economic Development Summit in Butte, Travelocity has agreed to invest $500,000 into Montana tourism. It will also give $10,000 to the inaugural Montana Folk Festival in Butte which will build off the popularity of the National Folk Festival in which Travelocity was a sponsor. Fourty-four million U.S. citizens lived in poverty in 2009 according the Census Bereau. That is an increase of 4 million people from the year before. The poverty rate climbed to 14.3 percent which is the highest it has been since 1994. Children suffered the most with 1 in 5 residents under the age of 18 lived below the official poverty line.

Minibus blast in Turkey kills 10
A roadside bomb killed 10 people and wounded three others as it exploded under their minibus in southeast Turkey. The blast occured near the borders of Iraq and Iran. Officials say the explosion was caused by a remote-control device. These type of devices have become popularly associated with the PKK militants, or Kurdistan Workers Party.

Sarah Palin talks faith in Missoula
Sarah Palin spoke faith and family to an audience of 1,600 at a Teen Challenge "Raising the Roof" fundraiser on Sunday. She shared her thoughts on the state of the government and incouraged people in Missoula to get involved in the transformation if they really want change. When Palin finished her talk, she offered to match the price a Palin-signed T-shirt would bring to help the Teen Challenge's goal of $450,000 in fundraising. The bidding started at $500, and sold for $3,500.

Senate approves Obama's small-business aid package.
The U.S. Senate passed President Obama's proposed small-business aid bill, which would create a $30 billion small-business lending fund and provide $12 billion in tax breaks. The measure passed by a 61-38 vote, with only two Republicans crossing party lines. The bill's goal is to encourage investment, entrepreneurship, and hiring, and could create up to 500,000 jobs.

Dozens injured in Kabul protest over Koran-burning threat
A violent protest left at least 40 people injured in Afghanistan's capitol Wednesday. Fueled by a Florida pastor's threat to burn the Koran, the demonstrations have been persisting for days and may continue through the week, and could even spew over and disrupt Saturday's parliamentary elections. Taliban leaders have already threatened to attack voters and polling places, and are believed to be behind the current demonstrations.

UN PULLS THIRD OF STAFF OUT OF AFGANISTAN

Abbas Expresses Determination to Continue Talks
ReplyDeletePalestinian president Mahmoud Abbas said that he saw no alternative to maintaining peace talks and that, “We all know there is no alternative to peace other than negotiating peace, so we have no alternative but to continue peace efforts.” This was after the Palestinians has threatened to walk out on peace talks if Netanyahu did not agree to extend the partial moratorium on construction of settlements. While he has refused to do this and there is a possibility that Abbas will walk out on the talks, Abbas’ comments seem to shine a positive light on the meetings to come.

Poverty Rate Rose Sharply in 2009, Says Census Bureau
Over the course of a year, from 2008 to 2009, the poverty rate rose 1.1 percent, from 13.2 to 14.3, the highest in America since 1994. In 2009, 44 million people, one in seven, lived under the poverty line. This report best paints a picture of the impact of the recession and demonstrates the affect of the stimulus bill in easing the burdens of the American public.

Travelocity invests $500K to promote Montana tourism
Travelocity announced Tuesday at the Montana Economic Development Summit that they would be contributing $500,000 towards promoting tourism in Montana. The contribution was applauded by officials seeing as though tourism brought in more than 10 million people and $3 billion dollars. National: In Cascades, a Search for the Grizzly
The last time a grizzly bear was seen in the Northern Cascades was in 1996. Mr. Gaines, a wildlife biologist fro the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, is in charge of a 6 member research crew who will be documenting whether grizzly bears are still dormant in the Northern Cascades. If so, the federal government may be reassured of increasing the grizzly bear population. "They would be augmenting the historic population, not trying to rebuild the population from scratch".

Local: Street racer sentenced to 5 years in fatal Highway 10 crash
The highway 10 street racer crash case has been closed. Matthew Charles, 23, who in August of 2008 had been involved in a fatal car crash along with Jacob Bailey, 25, on highway 10 was sentenced on Wednesday to 10 years at the Dept of Corrections, with five of those years suspended. Jacob Bailey died that night, four others were injured, and one young woman was put in wheel chair with permanent brain injuries. The case reflected Montana's damaged culture of drinking and driving.

Bacteria in the gulf mostly digested gas, not oil, study finds
New research suggests that the bacteria being used to clean up the oil spill are actually eating gas and not the oil itself. The bacterium that is being used is assumed to have the ability to decompose the oil appears to not be having as strong of effect as promised.

Senate Panel Approves Arms Treaty With Russia
President Obama's New Start Treaty received bipartisan support from the Senate on Thursday. The arms control treaty was signed by Obama and Russian President Dmitri A. Medvedev to initiate a seven year agreement to prevent either country from using strategic warheads. It will replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty of 1991 which ended last year.

Local: Montana legislators hear mixed news on state budget outlook
According to Terry Johnson, the Legislatures chief revenue forecaster “the projected general fund budget balance for the two-year budget period ending in mid-2011 may be as high as $235.6 million” This means that the state will not have to boost the general fund as was predicted earlier. Steven Rodriguez was beaten and thrown into the irrigation ditch off of the Madison Street Bridge. Three men were charged and sent to prison for the involvement in Rodriguez murder. William John Matt, 34 at the time was sentenced to 100 years in prison, but has been released as "the result of a 2008 MT Supreme Court decision overturning Matt's conviction on deliberate homicide and ordering a new trial"(Gwen Florio). According to the court the three men had taken his new firefighter boots and pawned them for $15, which they bought a half-gallon of vodka with. Controversy over what is fair and right in this case has been argued by the family of Rodriguez and Matt's.

International- Lead Poisoning Kills Nigeria Children
In Nigeria 400 children have died from lead poisoning. Runoff from illegal gold mining has entered the soil and water supply, which contains high concentrations of lead. The gold mining brings in money and local residents fear to disclose the poisoning because gold mining may be band.

National- 133 Charged in Puerto Rico Graft Inquiry
"The Justice Department on Wednesday announced the indictments of 89 police officers and 44 other people in Puerto Rico on drug trafficking charges" (charlie savage). FBI arrested 129 of the 133 that were accused. The police offers and other law enforcement officials were accused of providing security for drug deals in exchange for money. The department is taking a firm stance on those trying to abuse the law. "You will be caught. You will be stopped. And you will be punished", says Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr at a news conference announcing the indictments.

On July 30, 2010 rebels came running through Luvungi, Democratic of Congo and gang-rapped and beat at least 200 women. The peacekeepers are not keeping much peace in this torn area and the people of congo have expressed their concern of an un-kept promise. National-Man Tasered 4 times by Billings police dies
A man ran through the streets of Billings Sunday night and was chased down by Deputy John Smith who was driving home on 13th St West around 11:20 pm. He watched the man run into a house, which he assumed was not his so he followed the naked man. The man ran outside and stole Smiths van that he was driving and abandoned it a couple blocks down where police arrived and tried to subdue him. He was tasered a total a four times, but it seemed to have no effect on him. In the holding cell he suffered cardiac arrest and died on Tuesday. No charges have been filed yet.

Local-Man sentenced for DUI that killed 2 Hellgate girls
David James DelSignore pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in the Christmastime deaths of Ashlee Patenaude, 14, and Taylor Cearley, 15. They were walking along Highway 200 towards East Missoula when he DelSignore plowed into them while driving drunk and talking on his cell phone. He has been sentenced to 30 years in prison and could be eligible for parole in four years. "Its's not enough", said Jenipher Patenaude, Ashlee's mother, after the sentencing. Del Signore sat back and took the anger and heartbreak of the family and friends of the girls.
